London: Thousands of spectators gathered along the streets of central London, from the Houses of Parliament to Buckingham Palace, to witness a major military parade commemorating the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, marking the end of World War II in Europe.
Britain launched a four-day celebration, beginning three days ahead of the official VE Day date on May 8, aligning the start with the Monday Bank Holiday to allow for wider public participation.
At noon, the iconic chimes of Big Ben rang out, followed by a powerful performance by actor Timothy Spall, who delivered Winston Churchill’s historic 1945 victory speech to an enthusiastic crowd, echoing the spirit of the original moment.
For the first time since its dedication in 1920, the Cenotaph war memorial was adorned with Union Jack flags, symbolizing national unity and remembrance.
The parade featured 1,300 British troops alongside soldiers from NATO countries and Ukraine. The march began at Parliament Square and proceeded past Buckingham Palace, where King Charles offered a royal salute, adding a regal touch to the solemn and celebratory occasion.
